Roles are defining the rights/permissions of an employee. It is not meant to create a role per person but a role per position. It is possible to link multiple roles to an employee.
In summary, rights/permissions are all the possible actions that can be done within Maxxton Software, whereas roles are groups of actions which can be done by a type of user/user group for Maxxton Software.

Viewing detailed information related to permissions
You can now view the detailed information related to the permissions in Backoffice Manager if available. This will help you to understand the usage of the permission better and in more details. Here's an example which you can view by just clicking on the permission within any role (Backoffice Manager > Configuration > Roles > Assigned rights)
